href="https://dandigregorio.substack.com/?utm_source=substack&utm_medium=email&utm_content=share&action=share">Share Beyond the Self

This Week’s Review

We’re closing out Review VI, where the general statement each day has been “I am not a body. I am free. For I am still as God created me.” Today’s specific review is Lesson 200 — the last lesson of Part I of the Workbook.

Today’s Lesson

“Let me not wander from the way of peace, for I am lost on other roads than this. But let me follow Him who leads me home, and peace is certain as the love of God. There is no peace except the peace of God.”

Life in This Dimension

Life here is suffering. We’re born, and we die, and everything in between is dualistic — good or bad, happy or sad. We anticipate the future with hope or fear. We carry the past with regret or nostalgia. From start to finish, nothing in this world of illusion stays the same.

And yet peace is possible. Real peace. The peace of God.

The Only Road That Doesn’t Disappoint

Let me not wander from the way of peace, for I am lost on other roads than this. If I seek peace anywhere outside its one true source, I’m lost — because the world of change is built to disappoint. Yes, peace shows up here in fragments, in facsimiles that fractal into this experience. But does it ever last? The background of all existence is peace. But when we go looking for it in the world of form, it never holds.

Subscribe now

Following Him Home

Let me follow Him who leads me home, and peace is certain as the love of God. God is love — the fundamental nature of reality is love, and therefore peace. That’s the underlying background peace running beneath all existence. Peace is as certain as the love of God, if I follow Him who leads me home.

That’s the crux of the whole lesson. There is no peace except the peace of God, and I follow Him who leads me there.

Where Home Actually Is

Where is home? Not in this world. Not in the realm of change and form. Home is in your beingness. In your heart. In your presence, your true nature. This world offers reflections of it — a taste, a certain quality we can learn to tap into and progressively live from. True peace comes from our true nature, our pure beingness — not from identity, not from anything outside ourselves. It comes from the one true Self.

And the beautiful thing: God created all of us equal and one. Beneath the shifting, changing forms of this world, there is a single Son of God. So it’s not only inside ourselves that we contact this — not only in relation to Christ, to presence, to the Holy Spirit. We find peace in communion with our brothers and sisters here, who are what we are: the single, singular Son of God.

In communion with ourselves, with others, and with the Holy Spirit and Christ, we find peace in a world that isn’t built for it. And because all things are informed by God, and nothing can be separate from God, peace abides.

Closing

Join me next week as we move into Part II of the Workbook — a major transition point in how this text unfolds.

Dan DiGregorio is a 15-year student of A Course in Miracles and the inner journey, exploring daily what it means to live these teachings in an ordinary, dualistic life.
<p class="button-wrapper" data-attrs="{"url":"https://dandigregorio.substack.com/subscribe?","text":"Subscribe continuing Review VI, where the general statement each day is “I am not a body. I am free. For I am still as God created me.” Today’s review is of Lesson 199 — the actual source of that opening statement.

Today’s Lesson

“I am God’s Son. Be still, my mind, and think a moment upon this, and then return to earth without confusion as to what my Father loves forever as His Son. Amen.”

This is a statement I’ve heard for years, in my own practice and from many teachers and sources — you are not a body, you are free of everything you believe yourself to be.

One Son, or All of Creation?

In the Western spiritual tradition — Christianity and its offshoots — we’ve been taught that there was only ever one person in history who was God’s actual Son. A Course in Miracles is, remarkably, authored by that same consciousness. Whether or not you believe in reincarnation, or in intelligence and consciousness existing outside the body, that source point is what authored this text. The one commonly called Christ or Jesus authored this book — that’s his gift to us. But the deeper gift is the truth he wanted to communicate through it: that we, too, are the Son of God.

Depending on your background, that might be a hard thing to accept. But looking at it through non-dual truth, there’s nothing else to say — I am the Son of God. In non-dual truth, all of creation exists simultaneously as a single Self. That Self is God. There’s a creator, a source point, and there’s the creation of that source point — and this is what Christ was pointing to: I am an expression, a direct extension of the creative source. Singular. He meant that literally. The creative source is singular, and I, as the Son of God, am singular as the Son of God.

But non-dualistically: if one expression of creation is the Son of God, then all of creation is. From the perspective of separate bodies — chairs, trees, dogs, cats, phones, fish — it seems unacceptable that there could be multiple Sons of God. That’s the dualistic view. From the non-dual view, whatever created all things created them equally, and they share equally in that essence. What’s been created is the expression of the Creator itself — never separate, never different. Source and expression, but expression as Source.

So: I am not a body, I am free. And the very way this Course came into existence is itself a kind of proof of that.

Subscribe now

Be Still, My Mind

It’s funny — we’re comfortable saying we’re all God’s children, but we resist accepting that we’re His Sons, capital S.

Be still, my mind, and think a moment upon this, and then return to earth without confusion as to what my Father loves forever as His Son.

This is a call to embody, for a brief moment, what it means not to be a body — to let go of everything tied to being a person, an identity, this experience. To close your eyes, separate from that identification, and go inward into a state of presence that illuminates the truth: I am not a body. I am free. And then to return to earth without confusion about your true nature.

Christ is calling us: go get a taste. Tap into the source. Meet your Father. Become the Son of God, if only for a moment. And then return, knowing what you know — not believing it, not even having faith in it, knowing it — without confusion, what your Father loves forever as His Son.

Dan DiGregorio is a 15-year student of A Course in Miracles and the inner journey, exploring daily what it means to live these teachings in an ordinary, dualistic life. Review

We’re continuing Review VI, where the general statement each day is “I am not a body. I am free. For I am still as God created me.” Today’s specific review is Lesson 198.

Today’s Lesson

“Only my condemnation injures me. My condemnation keeps my vision dark, and through my sightless eyes I cannot see the vision of my glory. Yet today I can behold this glory and be glad.”

This lesson follows the same recursive, reflexive quality as yesterday’s — Lesson 217, it can be but my gratitude I earn.Today it shows up again: only my condemnation injures me. No one else’s condemnation of me can actually injure me. There’s never really any condemnation coming from an outside source — it’s only ever my own condemnation that impacts me.

What Condemnation Actually Does

To condemn something is to place blame on it — to treat it as having done something wrong, and therefore deserving of attack. My condemnation keeps my vision dark. I can’t see my own glory through sightless eyes, because I’m seeing what’s outside me as faulty, as unworthy of love — and in doing that, I lose sight of the underlying truth of what I’m perceiving as separate from me.

All creation is singular. That’s the non-dual truth. And yet because I experience myself as separate from what I perceive as outside me, I can’t see the glory within it — I can’t see the Self, capital S, in the other.

The Way Out Is Seeing the Mechanism

Yet today I can behold this glory and be glad. Nothing is actually being done to see the glory here — but becoming aware that only my condemnation injures me is itself the way out. Seeing the problematic mechanism of thought clearly is salvation.

Nothing outside me can harm me, because all is one. And yet, because I perceive myself as capable of attack, condemning what I think is outside myself is actually condemning myself. That act injures me both as the other and as myself.

The Resonance Field of Attack

An act of attack sets up a resonance field inside the self. Think of stress: when you’re stressed, you’re hurting yourself. The nervous system goes static, energy stagnates, and health deteriorates — a state of resistance rather than open flow. Condemnation is the same kind of state — tight, angry, angsty — and it hurts the body. It hurts the mind too, conditioning it to keep thinking in separation, in negative terms, over and over.

So only my condemnation injures me — nothing outside me can, because it’s only ever my own attack thoughts that harm the Self, both as other and as me. My condemnation keeps my vision dark by believing there’s something outside me at all, and that it’s done something worthy of attack. My vision stays dark; I can’t see the light, the love, the glory underneath. I’m blinded by my own hate.

Closing

Yet today, through this insight, through this teaching, through this realization, I can behold this glory. I now have the ability to see. And because of that, I can be glad.

Dan DiGregorio is a 15-year student of A Course in Miracles and the inner journey, exploring daily what it means to live these teachings in an ordinary, dualistic life.
<p class="button-wrapper" data-attrs="{"url":"https://dandigregorio.substack.com/subscribe?","text":"Subscribe Review

We’re continuing Review VI, where the general statement each day is “I am not a body. I am free. For I am still as God created me.” Today’s specific review is Lesson 197.

Today’s Lesson

“It can be but my gratitude I earn. Who should give thanks for my salvation but myself? And how but through salvation can I find the self to whom my thanks are due?”

A Course in Miracles is one of the most recursive, reflexive texts in existence — and it’s worth sitting with why, because this lesson is a clear example of it.

The Logic of a Text That Defines Itself Through Itself

Logically, referring to yourself as the reason for a truth about yourself sounds like it should be false — a predicate can’t be its own justification. But that’s exactly the structure the Course uses. God is God because God is God. The Son of God is the Son of God because He is the Son of God. It sounds almost meaningless at first, because nothing is being added — we’re defining the thing by itself, through itself. Reflexive. Recursive.

That’s not a flaw in the logic. It’s the point. The fundamental truth the Course teaches is non-dual — there is only one thing in existence, which is God, and there is nothing that can be added to that one thing. So a self-referential, recursive definition is the only kind of statement that can ultimately be made about it. Because we live in a dualistic dimension, we get to take that same recursive move and apply it through countless symbols, words, and angles — from the simplest possible version (”God is God, therefore God is God”) to something as layered as today’s lesson.

My Gratitude, Not Someone Else’s

Lesson 197 is tricky in a specific way — it’s reflexive right on the surface, linguistically. It can be but my gratitude I earn. We don’t normally think of earning our own gratitude. Gratitude usually has a subject and an object — I give thanks to someone else, for something else. But the Course is direct here: it’s my gratitude that I earn. No one else’s gratitude, and no one else earns mine.

Who should give thanks for my salvation but myself? That makes sense on its own. But then: And how but through salvation can I find the self to whom my thanks are due? Here it comes full circle — I’m giving thanks to myself, but “Self” is capitalized. That capital S could be replaced with the word God. I give thanks to God.

We’re so conditioned to think of God as external — something outside ourselves we thank when something good happens. Thank God. Always externalized. But the Course capitalizes Self specifically to point somewhere else: we are God. We are the Son of God. We are Self, capital S. And that is who we’re actually giving thanks to.

Subscribe now

What Salvation Actually Means Here

Salvation, in this lesson, is the dawning realization that you are the Son of God — the creation, the only thing God as the foundational beingness of all that is has actually created. That realization is salvation. So who should give thanks for my salvation but myself — I’m giving thanks for realizing that I am God. That I am all things, in all places, in all times, in all existence.

If that’s true — if we’re going fully non-dual, fully singular — then gratitude can only ever be given to myself, because I’m the only thing that exists. And how but through salvation can I find the self to whom my thanks are due — through that same recognition: I am not separate from myself. I am all that is. It’s through that recognition that I find the Self my thanks are actually due to.

This might be one of the most recursive, reflexive lessons in the whole book — a kind of Ouroboros feedback loop. I realize I am the Son of God, the creation of the Creator, loved as much as love can be, because He is nothing but love — and therefore I am love. That is my nature, and my identity. I give thanks for that realization. And more than that, I give thanks for the fact itself. I earn that gratitude because I’m the only thing that can give it, and the only thing that can receive it. I actually become gratitude.

The Link Back

Walk it back to Lesson 215: love is the way I walk in gratitude. There it is. Gratitude is nothing more than an expression of love. And love doesn’t take action on anything — it’s not a verb the way we usually experience it. Love simply is. It’s the one state of being underneath every changing form and phenomenon.

So I give gratitude for this realization, and I experience my own love flowing through my being, because this is truth — this is reality, this is all that actually is. Through that realization, we’re saved from the delusion of believing we’re some separate, isolated self. That distorted self-concept is where all pain, all fear, all suffering actually comes from. Even when experience feels like a distortion or a delusion, the Creator still informs all of it underneath — we can never actually be separate from that Self. That’s where salvation, gratitude, and love all open up together.

Closing

It can be but my gratitude I earn. Who should give thanks for my salvation but myself? And how but through salvation can I find the self to whom my thanks are due?

Dan DiGregorio is a 15-year student of A Course in Miracles and the inner journey, Review

We’re continuing Review VI, where the general statement each day is “I am not a body. I am free. For I am as God created me.” Today’s specific review is Lesson 196.

Today’s Lesson

“It can be but myself I crucify. All that I do, I do unto myself. If I attack, I suffer. But if I forgive, salvation will be given me.”

The Course is very clear: nothing can come to you without your having done it to yourself, effectively. We can see this both dualistically and non-dualistically.

Attack Turns Inward

When we behave defensively, or attack, or move in any emotion other than our true nature — love — we’re attacking our own reality. And in doing that, we’re making a blind attempt to attack ourselves. This is one of the fundamental machinations of the ego, and it perpetuates the illusion of separation.

Think about it logically. Something happens that we don’t like, and we attack it to defend ourselves. But from the non-dual perspective, anything that’s happening is our true nature expressing itself through that event. So non-dualistically, we’re doing it to ourselves. Dualistically, we don’t like it — so we defend, and to defend, we attack.

There’s a containment system at work here. We might assault something outside ourselves and cause it harm, but ultimately we’re harming ourselves — in two ways. Dualistically: stress and anger genuinely hurt the body, the mind, the nervous system — that’s not controversial, everyone knows stress isn’t good for you. Non-dualistically: we’re attacking ourselves because we’ve failed to perceive that all is one, so acting out on something that seems separate from us is, underneath, attacking ourselves.

Can you actually attack yourself? No — this starts to sound like a Zen koan. Can the eye see itself? Can a finger touch itself? What’s the sound of one hand clapping? What is the one hand — the one creation? We can’t attack ourselves because we are one. But in this perceptual, delusional dimension, there is absolutely the capacity to attack — others, ourselves, both.

Subscribe now

The Ego’s Losing Game

The ego sets up a recursive loop: something happens outside me that I don’t like, so I attack it to defend myself — but by defending myself, I attack myself. I can’t defend myself from anything outside me without attacking myself in the process. It’s a lose-lose, net-negative game. And that’s exactly what perpetuates it — if the ego can’t do anything about what it doesn’t like, it’s helpless, and it likes it that way. The ego isn’t set up to win. It’s set up to lose, perpetually.

Why does death exist? Looked at rationally, death is the ultimate expression of this cyclical loop — attack, crucifixion. It can be but myself I crucify. I harm myself, lowercase-s and capital-S — even though capital-S can’t actually be harmed, the attempt at crucifixion still happens. I try to hurt something I perceive as outside me, but all I ever do is attack myself. A hall of mirrors, lashing out at something I believe is separate from me, which is actually me, because all of experience is informed by the same underlying source.

Forgiveness as the Doorway

If I attack, I suffer. But if I forgive, salvation will be given me.

Forgiveness — dualistic and non-dual. Dualistic forgiveness is the direct antidote to the dualistic circumstance: something happens I don’t like, and instead of attacking it, I forgive it. I let it go. It’s already happened; there’s nothing I can do about the event, only about my reaction to it. I forgive it, and I forgive whoever else is involved.

Here’s the sweet spot, and it’s why forgiveness might be the single most important practice in the Course: when you forgive, for a brief moment, in the emptiness of thought inside that forgiveness, you enter the non-dual state. Spontaneous, organic, uncontrived — but it happens, every time. That non-dual realization is a break in the chatter of life, a holy instant. Meditation works the same way — it stops the momentum of activity and the momentum of our relationship to that activity, which is what perpetuates the separated sense of self. Forgiveness gets you into that same gap naturally, by letting go of the past and opening space for what fills it: reality, truth, presence.

You can practice forgiveness in the dualistic sense, and it will help. But it won’t take you as far as forgiveness practiced from the non-dual space — which can then be applied to any dualistic circumstance. Non-dual forgiveness means letting go of all orientation to this dimension entirely: forgiving the whole creation, the whole distortion, the whole illusion of separation. You forgive it, and you enter timelessness.

Once you’ve tasted that — once you know how it feels, embodied — you can apply it to anything. Pure presence. Pure letting go. Pure spaciousness. You enter atonement, attunement. You become what you actually are.

Closing

It can be but myself I crucify. But if I forgive, salvation will be given me. If I enter that timeless state and let go of all attachment to this dimension, salvation is mine — because I’ve accomplished what I am, and attuned myself to it.

Dan DiGregorio is a 15-year student of A Course in Miracles and the inner journey, exploring daily what it means to live these teachings in an Review

We’re in Review VI of A Course in Miracles Workbook, where the general statement each day is a repetition of Lessons 199 and 110: “I am not a body. I am free. For I am still as God created me.” That statement points to the singular nature of the Son of God, and it holds the whole review period together.

Each day also carries a more specific review — today, Lesson 215, reviews Lesson 195: “Love is the way I walk in gratitude.”

Today’s Lesson

“Love is the way I walk in gratitude. The Holy Spirit is my only guide. He walks with me in love, and I give thanks to Him for showing me the way to go.”

When we look at gratitude here, we want to be careful. This gratitude connects directly to the non-dual truth underneath the Course — that we are not a body, we are free, and we are as God created us: the Son of God, an extension of Him, carrying all the faculties of the Creator without being the capital-G God Creator ourselves. A perfect reflection of that creative source. Walking in gratitude means walking in appreciation of what we actually are.

Reading It Two Ways

The Course can be difficult because the mind gets caught in duality and misses the non-dual truth sitting beneath it. That doesn’t make the dualistic reading wrong — the Course itself lays out real, practical points about living in this reality: a human body, relationships with other seemingly separate bodies, and so on. This lesson can be read both ways, but I want to start with the non-dual perspective.

Love is the way I walk in gratitude — being love, being my true nature, being what I am, and embodying that fully.

Dualistically, it’s love, joy, compassion, presence, availability — embodying love in the world of bodies and beings and egos and personas. That is the way I walk in gratitude for what I’ve been given by Him who gives all things.

Subscribe now

A Hidden Link to Yesterday

This is part of why I love working the Course not just day by day, but in sets. Yesterday’s lesson, 214, was: “I place the future in the hands of God” — because I trust that all God gives is good. There’s a deliberate connection between the two: we walk in gratitude for what we’ve been given because when we realize our true nature — fully embody it, fully agree with it perceptually — we walk in love, and that is walking in gratitude.

We’re grateful because we know that everything we find ourselves in is good, fundamentally, even when it doesn’t look that way dualistically. We can shift our perception through the Course, through contemplation, through practice, through surrender — until even the things that don’t feel good, we can take with gratitude. Not self-effacing. Not martyrdom. Not a quiet victim story running underneath. Something closer to: this is happening, and dualistically speaking, this isn’t a good circumstance — but this is happening for a reason. I’m going to sit with this.

The Feedback Loop

Dualistically speaking, in this world, there’s good and bad — it’s always going to be hard, and it’s always going to be miraculous, and then eventually you’re dead. We have to stay aware of that dualistic nature. But we can also hold a non-dual perspective on top of it, because we’ve come to a realization of true nature, true Self.

It becomes a cyclical feedback loop: the dualistic insight informs the non-dual insight — not the non-dual reality itself, but our insight into it. And the non-dual insight informs the dualistic insight. They feed each other. Dualistic nature and non-dual nature are what they are — non-dual nature is Truth, capital T. Dualistic experience is not, though it’s informed by that truth.

The Holy Spirit as Guide

The Holy Spirit is my only guide. Not my ego. Not even everything I think, all the time. He walks with me in love — everything that occurs, He knows as love, because He has planned it for you. And I give thanks to Him for showing me the way to go.

Even when you think something is the way to go, and it turns out it wasn’t — He knew. Think about how patterned a human life actually is: what time you wake up, what you eat because it’s what’s in your pantry, the loop of an ordinary day, again and again. That patterning is probabilistic enough that something at the beginning and end of time, connecting the two, would genuinely know what’s coming, and could be guiding us through it, intentionally, all the way through.

If things are working out, give it up to God. If they’re not, that’s not of God — that’s this perceptual realm, and we give it to the Holy Spirit instead. This circumstance is for the illumination of my true self, breaking past the illusion the egoic mind has fabricated in this dimension. Beneath that is the truth.

So I walk in gratitude for all things that occur, because I know everything that occurs is for my best interest — even when it makes me cry, even when I don’t want it to be the case. You’ve got my back. You know what’s happening and why. You put me here. There’s a reason. I am safe. I am protected. I am guided. I am sustained. All is well.

Closing

I am not a body. I am free, for I am as God created me. I am the Holy Son of God. I am safe in this world. There is no danger, and I am sustained by His love. Love is the way that I walk in gratitude for my experience and my existence, as I am in my true Self and as I am in this experience. The Holy Spirit is my only guide. I listen not to my ego, but to His guidance and the path He asks me to walk. For He walks with me in love, and I give thanks to Him for showing me the way to go.

Dan DiGregorio is a 15-year student of A Course in Miracles and the inner href="https://dandigregorio.substack.com/?utm_source=substack&utm_medium=email&utm_content=share&action=share">Share Beyond the Self

I am not a body. I am free. For I am still as God created me.

This is one of the most direct statements in A Course in Miracles: not a metaphor, not a suggestion — a flat statement of what you are not. You are not this body. Not this incarnation. What you are is untouched by form, and free. That’s the Self-Realization the entire Course is built to lead you toward.

No change has occurred to your true nature. The form you’re wearing right now doesn’t touch what’s underneath it.

Lesson 194: the one that stayed with me

Today’s review pairs 214 with Lesson 194 — I place the future in the hands of God. Of everything in this text, this is one of the handful of lessons that has genuinely reshaped how I live. Not because I studied it the hardest, but because it was taught to me directly, inside my own life, until I couldn’t miss it.

The past is gone. The future is not yet. Now I am freed from both. For what God gives can only be for good, and I accept but what He gives as what belongs to me.

That’s a hard sentence to actually live in a culture built on making it happen. I know that pull well — I’m someone who wants to make things happen too. What’s been taught to me, over and over, is simpler: what’s meant for you is already meant for you. Align with that, and the present moment starts falling into place on its own.

So the work isn’t managing the past or engineering the future. It’s staying present — present enough that it retunes the whole system: nervous system, mind, thought, perception. The truth underneath is simple. Living it isn’t, because consciousness itself is a complex matrix here. So the practice is repetition: return to the holy instant. Return to what’s here. Work with whatever surfaces — ego, resistance, fear — because that’s the actual material.

You can’t manufacture your true nature. It already is what it is. All you can do is clear what’s standing in front of it — which is the whole reason it’s called Self-realization, not self-improvement.

Subscribe now

What surrender actually means here

Placing the future in God’s hands is a full surrender — closely aligned with Michael Singer’s Surrender Experiment: no energy spent managing what’s coming, only full presence given to what’s already here, in service of what’s unfolding.

There’s a line worth sitting with directly from the text: you cannot be where God has not placed you. That’s literal in the physical sense. And it’s the non-dual truth underneath it too — you cannot be what you are not. You were placed as the Son of God, as His creation. That doesn’t change, regardless of what your circumstances have convinced you to believe about yourself.

You are not your body. You are presence. Being. From that place, handing over the future isn’t a risk — it’s recognition. Nothing here can actually harm you (Lesson 244). You are sustained by the love of God (Lesson 50). And there is no future to hand over in the first place — only ever this. The past was a present moment when it happened. The future will be too, when it arrives. There is only the holy instant, met again and again.

When it gets hard anyway

None of this exempts you from difficulty. Life will still push back. I’ve always liked how Abraham-Hicks frames it: your inner guidance moves you through resistance sometimes, and around it other times — but the friction itself has a purpose. It’s there to wake you up to what’s actually true underneath the fear: there is no real danger here, and you are fully held, no matter what the moment looks like from inside it. You’ll be okay. Not because you’ll necessarily get the outcome you wanted — but because okay was never dependent on the outcome.

I accept what He gives as what belongs to me isn’t a wish list. It’s not what you think you need in order to finally feel secure. It’s deeper — and simpler. You’re already supported. That part isn’t yours to manage.

Holding the dual and the non-dual together

As always, this practice holds two lenses at once. Dualistically: everything that shows up in your life — welcome or not — belongs to you. It’s your providence, your unfolding, exactly as it is.

Non-dualistically: you’ve already been given everything, because you already are everything. The separated, isolated self is the illusion. What the Course calls the brotherhood of the Son of God — all of it, informed by the same underlying truth, even where it doesn’t look like it. What He gives already belongs to you, because you were never actually separate from it.

Dan DiGregorio is a 15-year student of A Course in Miracles and the inner journey,
